There are many types of acne, the most common is called acne vulgaris. There are several different presentations of acne ranging from comedonal (blackheads and whiteheads), popular, pustule, and cystic acne. In many cases, many of these presentations of acne can be present on an individual simultaneously.

Acne results from the obstruction and inflammation of the sebaceous glands, and it affects 80% of the human population. Acne typically begins in adolescence with hormonal changes. However there are many older individuals who suffer from "adult" acne.

PHOTODYNAMIC ACNE TREATMENT

Prior to Photodynamic Acne Treatment, the best available medical grade treatment option for cystic acne was Accutane. There are two steps to this therapy:

• Levulan (Aminolevulinic Acid – ALA) is applied to your skin. ALA is a natural substance found throughout your body, as it is a precursor for hemoglobin synthesis. It is a clear solution and painless. While the drug incubates (physician recommends length of incubation period), Acne sebaceous glands which are active cells, absorb the Levulan.
• Levulan is then activated with a specific wavelength of light called BLUE U. This takes about 10 – 15 minutes. During this activation, the Levulan will also target hyperplasia (small benign, bumps) and papules of acne rosacea. Skin oiliness is decreased, and pore size is minimized. BLUE U LIGHT ACNE TREATMENTS

The Blue Light treatment is a new FDA approved Acne treatment that does not depend on medication. The BLU-U is a very special blue light that can kill the p. acnes bacteria in your skin. Treatments are simple – you simply sit with your face close to the light for a short time at a schedule set up by your doctor, usually a 15-30 minute session for once or twice per week. The treatments may go on for five weeks or so. It’s very safe, it’s not hot, it’s not painful at all. After some weeks, the blue light can control your acne, or clear it up entirely for a long period of time.

How does Blue-U light work ? Scientific development has shown, that light at a particular wavelength kills bacteria in the sebaceous glands. The Blue light at 417 nanometer wavelength, activates endogenous photo-sensitizers within the P.acnes bacteria. This creates a toxic bacteriocidal environment in the sebaceous gland that inhibits the obstruction of the sebaceous follicle and formation of acne lesions.
