ANTIOXIDANT COCKTAIL by Dr. Bollmann

Free Radicals

A healthy cell has a mortal enemy which is called a "free radical." Free radicals occur naturally when oxygen in the bloodstream combine with any of a diverse group of chemicals including those commonly found in polluted air, in primary and/or second hand cigarette smoke, in known chemical toxins; as well as, in food additives and in re-heated cooking oil.

Free radicals constantly seek out healthy cells and attack their vulnerable outer membranes eventually causing cellular degeneration, aging and death. Scientists know today, that free radicals carry out the actual destructive work in disease, in infection, in stress and in aging.

In short – medical science today knows without a doubt, that anti-oxidant intervention, which can come from taking vitamin supplements or from a steady routine of exercise, slows parts of the aging process. Anti-oxidant intervention slows down basal skeletal muscle oxidation, which causes the body to age. Regular exercise or a diet including plenty of anti-oxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C and beta carotene, all of which fight the tendency of oxygen to slowly break down muscle mass, might protect against the type of tissue and muscle loss that occur as individuals grow older. Daily anti-oxidant intake, especially vitamin E, has also been proven to protect against heart disease.

Anti-Oxidant Complex

Free radicals have to be combated from the outside (skin care), as well as from within. Internally, the destructive effects of free radicals can be prevented with the addition of anti-oxidants in the diet or by anti-oxidant supplements. A good anti-oxidant complex supplement actually has advantages over diet sources in that the complex has many different specific types of anti-oxidants which seek out and destroy free radicals at many various cellular sites. As a result, as anti-oxidant increases due to the supplementation of higher amounts of a greater variety of anti-oxidants, cellular damage lessens and performance and health improves.

Flax Seed’s benefits are recorded in history

The benefits of Flax Seed is recorded in ancient history. The crop was used as a food source as far back as 3000 B.C. Hippocrates was known to use flaxseed for relief of abdominal pain. Charlemagne considered flax so healthy that he required its consumption by law.

Why ground flax seed ?

Dr. Bollmann highly recommends the use of ground flax seed instead of flax oil for optimal nutritional value. Flax oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, but it does NOT contain the beneficial lignans and fiber. The lignans and fiber are removed in the production process. Flax seed contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. About one-third of the fiber in flax seed is soluble. Soluble fiber can aid in lowering cholesterol and regulating blood sugar levels. Two-thirds of the fiber in flax seed is insoluble. Insoluble fiber aids digestion by increasing bulk and preventing constipation. These characteristics seem to have a role in reducing incidents of colon cancer.

How much to take ?

Typical ground flax seed intake - 25 to 30 grams / day. Dr. Bollmann recommends to take the Flax Seed twice a day mixed with food or a drink.
